After 15 years of developing a way to hollow out logs in the shape I want and fast enough for modern man (along with all the accessories and the process)...I got old enough to develop a bad back, then my truck died. So I gave up the wood sculpting and stared painting.
Of course I may continue to do a few custom orders if no one offers me a reasonable price for the lathe.
I have a chain hoist to pick up the logs with and position them on the lathe. The motor runs on 120v or 240v. I designed end grain cutting hooks and a large auger to take out the core, after I turn the shape. And I have plans for building a better tail center, and for a dead-man foot switch.
it is essential to use green logs, dry end grain is not easy.
there is about 36" between centers but with a waste block I got only 26" max left for the drums, and that’s about it for the center boring auger. That could be made better.
if your interested in building one I will sell you plans with improvements and operating instructions for $20. That’s 28 pages of drawings/concepts etc and 12 pages of old articles about building lathes......
The bidding will begin at $1200…this should be twice as much. I spent many hundreds of dollars on machine shop work alone.
This includes a dozen gouges and cutting hooks. And a rope hoist, chain hoist, end boring auger, 2 300 watt lights, wiring diagram, plans for a better tail stock, dead man foot switch etc....
all this steel weighs a lot so I don’t recommend shipping it anywhere. I am hoping some one in the northwest will come pick it up. .
